RoadFish.com men?s lifestyle and finance magazine uses the recent news of Lauryn Hill?s alleged failing to file taxes for three years in a row as a platform to encourage its readers to always be honest and forthright with their taxes
Newark, NJ (PRWEB) June 07, 2012
RoadFish.com men?s lifestyle and finance magazine today urged readers to be truthful and forthright with their taxes, using the recent news of Grammy award winner Lauryn Hill?s alleged failure to file taxes as a platform to get its message out. Miss Hill is currently facing up to a year in prison and up to $300,000 in penalty fees if convicted. RoadFish.com encouraged readers to report taxes truthfully and on time, not simply to avoid serious charges of tax evasion, but to keep their personal finances, credit score, and piece of mind intact.
David Voreacos of Business Week reported today that RB great Lauryn Hill has been charged with allegedly failing to file federal income tax returns for 2005, 2006, and 2007. During these three years, she reportedly made $1.8 million in gross income. Voreacos reports that Hill was charged in federal court in Newark, New Jersey, with a criminal information, documentation that typically comes just before a ?guilty? plea by the defendant. The article states that Hill is scheduled to appear in court in Newark at the end of June, and will face up to one year in prison and $300,000 in fines (a $100,000 fine on each of the three misdemeanor counts against her.) Her attorney, Nathan Hochman, is quoted in the article as saying, ?Ms. Hill has been fully cooperating with the IRS?s investigation for a number of years.? The case is U.S. v. Hill, 12-mj-6081, U.S. District Court, District of New Jersey (Newark).
RoadFish.com pointed out to readers that financial trouble can follow you regardless of fame or wealth. RoadFish.com?s Senior staff writer is quoted as saying, ?It?s unfortunate to hear about this type of thing, but I think that the lesson everyone can get out of it is how serious tax evasion can be. Here we have a 5-time Grammy award winner facing hundreds of thousands of dollars in penalties and jail time for allegedly not filing taxes. It?s serious stuff, and no amount of wealth, fame, or Grammy awards can save you if you?re not smart about your finances and not honest about filing your taxes.?
The Associated Press reported that according to court documents, Hill owns and runs four companies, Boogie Tours Inc., L.H. Productions 2001 Inc., Studio 22 Inc., and Creations Music Inc. According to the article Hill?s primary source of income is royalties from the movie and music industries. The AP reported that Hill?s court date is set for June 29th, where she will sit before U.S. Magistrate Judge Michael A. Shipp in Neward to face her federal charges.
RoadFish.com took a stand to suggest that readers be completely transparent with all aspects of money, finance, and taxes to avoid a run-in with the law as well as a huge financial blow. RoadFish.com?s Senior staff writer is quoted as saying, ?There are so many repercussions of bad financial decision making, a heavy slap on the hand by the feds is just one of them. Poor financial decisions can lead to relationship trouble, a tainted credit score, the potential for a lot of money to be owed in the future, and just plain lack of peace of mind. It?s so not worth it. It might be tempting to fabricate things on your tax return for a little extra in a refund, but it doesn?t even come close to being worth it for the trouble, stress and repercussions it can cause you later on in life. I like to say that if you?re honest, nothing can hurt you. Be honest in all areas of life, including being totally transparent on your taxes.?
37-year-old Lauryn Hill won two Grammy awards in 1996, along with her RB band the Fugees. In 1998, Hill came out with a solo album, ?The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill,? which has sold 18 million copies since its release and went on to receive the title ?Album of the Year? at the 1999 Grammy Awards. Hill has won a total of 8 Grammy Awards out of the 19 she has been nominated for. Time has referred to her as the face of ?Hip-Hop Nation.? According to the above-mentioned Business Week article, Hill currently resides in South Orange, New Jersey, with her six children and her mother.
